Problems upgrading to kernel 2.6.2

Yeah, its all good. I still have my 2.4.22 kernel available (I editted Lilo so that I had a DOS, Linux, and an oldlinux selection.) I would just boot up into old linux and try to recompile the 2.6.2 kernel from xterm in Windowmaker

I would do oldconfig or menuconfig anyways-- I don't like how they do xconfig for gconfig.

Another thing that may have some bearing on your problem, the 2.6.x kernels require additional software in order to make correct use of modules; under debian, you can grab these using 'apt-get install module-init-tools'. I'm not sure how you go about getting them with other distro's, but without them, you can't load modules, and if you're trying to get things up and running its a whole lot easier to insert a module than recompile the whole kernel.
