problems mounting vfat partition

I just upgraded to kernel 2.6.9. Durnig menuconfig in the filesystems section i said yes to vfat and then I was asked to give a default codepage and charset (or something) I didn't know what to write so I wrote what was in the parenthesis. Problem now is that I can't mount my partition anymore.
Any suggestions?
Thanx in advance

What errors does it give you when you try?

root@ody:/home/ody# mount /dev/hda6 /home/plits
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hda6,
or too many mounted file systems

Try specifying the filesystem ( option -t vfat) or leave the /dev/hda6 part out if this mount is in your fstab.

I gave the wrong charset during config. I would like to recompile to fix this.
So I reconfigure the kernel and then what are the commands?
make clean
make
make install?

make clean
make bzImage

That's how I'd do it, I'm too scared of "make install"

Shouldn't it be "make mrproper". I don't think "make clean" works.

then:
make xconfig/oldconfig

make bzImage
make modules
make modules_install
OR
make bzImage && make modules && make modules_install

To make the kernel and modules.
