Why not use the official Slackware package? http://slackware.it/en/pb/package.ph..._5_0_06-i586-1

shall give it a try. also i tried using the rpm2tgz command and it said it:
"ERROR: rpm2cpio failed. (maybe jre-1_5_0_06-linux-i586.rpm.bin is not an RPM?)"

An exit code of 0 usually indicates sucess. What do you see if you do ls -l /var/log/packages | grep -i jre in a terminal?

firefox still doen't reconize that java's installed.
*well, i think it might just be gamesville. I was trying to get java to work so my mom could use this while her computer is being fixed. Gamesville says that my java version isn't compatable to run there games and that i have to have windows 95 or later and the latist version of internet explorer.

You've now got 2 versions of java installed. 1.5.0.04 was already there. If you installed 1.5.0.06 you needed to use upgradepkg. Normally from a console as root.

To get rid of the old Java package, in a terminal, as root, do removepkg /var/log/packages/jre-1_5_0_04-i586-2

In firefox, type the address aboutlugins and see if java's listed.

If all else fails, make sure there's a symlink to the java plugin in the firefox plugins folder. If it's not there, you can create it so:

Code:
root@box:# ln -s /usr/lib/java/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so /usr/lib/firefox/plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so
EDIT:

damn smilies - that shoulda been about : plugins (but without the spaces)
