problems getting x to run at optimal resolution

hello there.
i have succesfully setup dropline gnome and x to use the ati firegl modules for 3d acceleration on my radeon 9000. i have a nec flatpanel multisync 17 inch monitor.
my monitors manual says its optimal resolution is 1280x1024 at 60hz.

so i get everything setup, and add the monitors hsync and vertrefresh in the xconfig.

31.5kHz - 81.1 kHz horizontal
56.0 Hz - 75.0 Hz vertical.

i load x and everything works fine, except when i go to the screen resolution, it shows 1280x1024 @ 75 Hz. this is unchangable within the dropline configuration. my monitor claims it can run at 75 Hz but it should be ran at 60 Hz.

does anyone know how to change this so i can run it at 1280x1024 at 60Hz? (my windows configuration has no problem doing this)

i have tried using the xvidtune and tweaking the refresh to 60Hz but then the display goes all garbled. i am not sure how to synchronize these. i think i will have to add a Modeline to the xconfig file, but i am having issues.

if anyone can help resolve this problem, that would be great.

edit: i had just gotten the information from my windows setup.
it is running at 1280x1024. H frequency 64kHz and V frequency 60 Hz. Sync = seperate. hope this helps figure out what i need to do for Xfree.

peace,
univerz.

75mhz is better than 60mhz
this is its refresh rate and determines how fast the display is redrawn
the faster the better , it doesnt depend on cpu power or anything

pico /etc/X11/XF86Config
scroll down to the resolutions.
find the one that is your default resolution and add: "1280x1024"
Fascistchicken is right about the mhz

startx
reset monitor geometry
