Problems booting windows after LILO install

Hi,

Before installing Slack, split my harddrive using Partition Magic (NTFS drive) - checked that I could still boot windows xp home - no problem.

Installed Slackware 10.2 - no problems, can boot into it (using LILO), can run everything. Installed LILO in the MBR, booted into windows, got a 'Windows XP Professional Preinstallation' message then the system shutdown.

Any idea why? Anyone ever had this message after installing LILO?

I've recovered the system by fdisk /mbr, but I'm curious as to why I'm getting this problem. I've dual booted Slack loads of times using LILO and FAT32/FAT16 partitions, but this is the first time I've used it with NTFS.

Thanks

Hi

This could be completely wrong but mabye you made the linux partition active instead of the ntfs partition.

Which order do you have your partitions (windows before or after the linux partitions)?

There's some flag you can use in lilo "boot as=" which seem to solve a lot of these issues. Don't remember the actual flag but it's been posted in this forum recently.

Hi,

ntfs partition is before Linux partition, ntfs partition is the active one. I don't remember the exact config as the PC is at home, think its

/dev/hda1 = XP Home
/dev/hda2 = Slack

I'll have a play around tonight.

Thanks,
Mike.

Lilo should boot your XP with these 2 lines

other=/dev/hda1
label=XP

Your problem could be linked to a hidden partition with which XP back up its system files.

Do a fdisk -l and list its content here.
