problems after kernel compile

Hi guys,

i just compiled 2.6.15 with smp support and for 3d acceleration according tot he how-to from this forum...

now after compiling, I can boot with it but i have following problems..

1. while booting, the fonts are very large .....

2. eventhough i compiled with smp I get only single processor in /proc/cpuinfo .. what should I do to get 2 logical processors ?

3. my network is not working ..! nic is shown in lspci..

i can ping to localhost but when i try to ping other pcs it says network unreachable !!

what did I do wrong ?

Your network drivers are not compiled in, or not loaded via modprobe.
You need to compile in FrameBuffer support, and edit your lilo.conf to use small console fonts.

1- you have to enable framebuffer stuff. I don't use this so i can't be more precise.
2- that seems strange. Is your bios showing two cpu? Did you try some smp kernel from some live cd? A motherboard's jumper misconfigured?
3- if you compiled the nic's driver as a module, be sure it's loaded with lsmod.

i dont have 2 processors, only single processor P4 with HT so the bios will only show one processor. What I wanted to do was to get 2 logical processor. I have read about this an it seems to be possible and it gives also some performance advantages..

as far as I know I selected the NIC driver .. I have broadcom nic I will try again .

Hi !,

the nic problem is solved ... i selected the wrong nic card.. not it is working.

still i get very big fonts in starting.....I enabled framebuffer

do i need to enable something special under frame buffer e.g. my graphic chip ?

and still only one processor....

About HT, you probably missed some kernel option. Do gkrellm shows 2 processors?

Under the SMP option, you have the SMT scheduler (Hyperthreading), but you should have already enabled this. You typed lilo after compiling and moving the kernel in /boot?
