Problem with X
 

Hi! I have one problem: when I want to launch KDE (or Gnome or some other) with any command (startx, startkde, gnome-session etc.) I have fatal error. Here is some parts of message:

Screen(s) found but all is unusable
...
no screens found
...


I already read mans, HOW-TOs and other information, that I found but it didn't help.

I tried to copy file /etc/X11/XFree86-vesa (or something similar) to /root/XFree86. But after that I just saw white screen and cursor, when I started X

I tries to run command XFree86 -configure and then (to test it) XFree86 -Xf86Config /etc/X11/XFree86.new (or something similar, like it was described in message after X was configured). But after that my monitor was out of range, and I couldn't do anything (Just hit reboot button).

My system:
OS: Slackware Linux 9.2
Kernel: linux 2.4
Motherboard: NB35-EC
Chipset: Intel 845G (or GL)
Sound and video integrated
Mouse: Genius Optical with scroll wheel :)

I forgot to tell you that I have monitor: Samsung SyncMaster 753DFX

Try xf86config to create a config file for your X. It will ask questions about graphic card, monitor, etc. The monitor rates are documented in the monitor manual most of the time.

You can configure your mouse bij editing the /etc/X11/XF86Config file after that. How to do that is the most asked question on this forum, so a search will help you find the answer for that.

Ok, i done it. Now I can start KDE but it starts with ugly face (I think only 256 colors). I confiugred to startup with 24 bit color but... And I can't start other window managers (Gnome, Fluxbox, Blackbox etc.)

P.S. When I used xf86config file there wasn't my chipset in the list. Maybe this is heart of the problem. And how I can install my Intel 845GL chipset in Linux.

P.S. Sorry, I use Slackware Linux 9.1 not 9.2 :)

Backup your /etc/X11/XF86Config file and try running xf86config again and choose 16 bit color, or manually edit /etc/X11/Xf86Config, changing the default color depth.
