JavaMeister,
You don't say which kernel your Ubuntu 16.04.3 32-bit system has. The problem of this thread is affected by kernels greater or equal to 4.4.75 (somewhere between 4.4.38 and 4.4.75) as the thread title indicates. If your kernel is 4.4.75 or greater, then I know of two solutions:
1. Switch to 64-bit.
2. See my last response of 9/20/17 about adding " stack_guard_gap=6" to the kernel boot parameters.
Ever since I have done #2, I have not had any LibreOffice Base crashes.
HTH.

My kernel is 4.10.0-35-generic.
I have a feeling I am on the wrong forum.
I am not running Slackware Linux.
There is no packages dir at /var.
There is no lilo.conf anywhere on my hd.
I am hopeful that the stack_guard_gap=6 will work for me, but bormant's instructions are not going to do it.
I can try installing the 64-bit version of Ubuntu; my computer support guy says my Pentium E2140 processor is 64-bit and will allow it. I really don't want to do that, though, if the stack_guard_gap fix will work for me.
Can anybody direct me to the forum where this problem is being (or has been) addressed for Ubuntu 16.04 32-bit?
Your help much appreciated.

Ubuntu uses grub instead of lilo. But to be able to add stack_guard_gap=6 to the kernel parameters for grub, see this Ask Ubuntu answer.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! "stack_guard_gap=6" did the trick. I am so happy I don't have to install the 64-bit OS.

I will go mark the post as SOLVED in the forum where I originally posted the problem.

As described on the Linux - Software forum, "stack_guard_gap=1" kernel parameter also fixes this problem.
