Well guys I upgraded from gaim 1.5 to the new gaim beta 4, compiled --with-howl and now bonjour shows up in the list of protocols. So I got two quick questions...

Before with gaim 1.5 all I did was add /usr/lib/firefox in my ld.so.conf and compiled gaim and gmail/msn worked without a hitch. Now that I compiled the new gaim gmail/msn refuses to start saying no ssl is found? Has anyone else encountered this problem yet?

Also I have no bonjour experience but I would like to give it a try with gaim. When I try to start my bonjour account I get a message saying it can not connect to mDNS. From my googling it looks like I need to install avahi-daemon. Would this be correct?

Well I just went ahead and installed GnuTLS along with a few other packages and now its all happy.

However I still don't understand the avahi-daemon... I got it installed along with avahi-core and avahi-common I try to start the avahi-daemon and dbus refuses it with the message

"dbus_bus_request_name(): Connection "1:4" is not allowed to won the service "org.freedesktop.Avahi" due to security policies in the configuration file"

I can turn off dbus support but I think that is how bonjour connects to the avahi-daemon.
