Hi there
I am a vicious gamer. I was configuring Wine to run some of my Windoze games under Slack 10.1. (I know Cedega actually runs some of my games but I wanted to try a little with Wine). So i got Age of Empires II running more or less fine (with weird fonts), and Heroes of Might and Magic running PERFECTLY, as if it was native Windoze. I even made desktop icons for them...
Everything was right until I wanted to run Age of Mythology. It always gave me an error msg telling me that the video card was not supported. After trying lots of things and before trying Cedega, I copied 2 strings from my Windoze partition's registry to the Wine registry. After that, AOM still didn't work, but weirdly AOE2 started to run VERY slowly, as well as HMM. I deleted my .wine dir and restarted wine, and even regedit runs now VERY SLOWLY.
I thought it was something related to wine, but when I took a look in my /var/log/Xorg.log (I think that's the filename of the X logfile), i found that it was actually a problem with my video card. (in other words, i'm afraid it was somehow damaged).
It's an Intel 865G integrated videocard. I'm using the Intel i915 driver compiled in kernel 2.6.10 and the i810 X driver. I had never before have problems with it. The logfile says that the V_BIOS (i suppose the video bios) checksum is bad. It says that a specific BIOS function is not supported.
I installed the very same Wine and games in a Toshiba Satellite A50 with Slack 10.1 and it works perfectly as it used to in my desktop pc. (obviously excepting AOM and now i don't even want to try; the card is also an Intel integrated chipset, same kernel driver, same X driver). I think I crashed my videocard, i hope it isn't so.
Any help is welcome. Anyway if i have to clean my Slack install it would be a great occasion to upgrade to Slack 10.2.
Thanks in advance.
Folken.
