for my desktop, i selected fluxbox and i just finished configuring Xorg.
when i use the startx command, slackware will get to the desktop and all i see is a blank white screen with a bar on the bottom. the problem is that i can't use the mouse. i tried exiting the desktop by pressing keys but none of them seemed to have an effect. i had to press restart in the end.
is this a problem with my configurations? i used the automatic xorgsetup thing to setup my desktop. thank in advance for anybody that can help
Well, first question, are you familiar with fluxbox? If not, try xfce. I suppose you use xwmconfig in order to switch from fluxbox to whatever window manager.
What kind of mouse is yours? Read shilo's howto.
Do not press restart in slackware ever :-) If your desktop environment (kde, fluxbox...) does not behave, press Ctrl-Alt-Backspace

it's the same with xfce. i still can't use the mouse.

stickfun, yes, most *box wms will only provide you with a bar and a menu with right click button, their designs are simple.
If you want a full-featured desktop you can try Gnome, KDE or XFCE. I would suggest you to use one of these until you get used to Linux and then switch to another one.
Originally posted by dan_slack Do not emulate 3 buttons, try the most basic mouse configuration. Run again xorgconfig.
no, i'm not emulating 3 buttons and i've selected it as a microsoft mouse in the config. the auto setting also doesn't work

I see, well you've more options than fluxbox for that kind of machine, IceWM is very lightweight and nice, FVWM2 which is very good in terms of lightweight, but you MUST learn how to configure it because it's not easy, and you also have "lower" wm options like EvilWM which are mostly just plain window managers (a border is drawn around windows and you can use keys and mouse to move them, nothing else provided).
As for the mouse problem, is it a serial mouse? or ps/2? (The mouse is handled by the X server and not by the window managers, this will improve your search i guess)

it's a ps/2 mouse.
when you say that the mouse is handled by the X server, do you mean that it's somewhere in the xorgconfig?
Yes, xorgconfig generates a file (or should do it at least :P) called /etc/X11/xorg.conf (you can open it with a editor to do changes manually since it's plain text file) which is X server configuration file as you may guessed. You may try changing your mouse protocol there to see if you can get it work. Here is the X documentation about mouses: http://www.x.org/X11R6.8.2/doc/mouse.html
Read carefully the /etc/X11/xorg.conf
It is well commented.. look at Core Pointer's InputDevice section (mouse).
Option "Protocol" should be "PS/2"
Post your xorg.conf
