(1) Check, if you really have cups and only cups installed. If you have more than one printing/spooling system installed, they may interfere. On my Slack 10 box I have done a default install, which includes lprng and cups, and cups worked just fine, nevertheless, but quite a few people on LQ report problems caused by having installed more than one printing software package. Of course, you can choose lprng in favour of cups, but cups is probably more flexible for heterogeneous environments (otherwise some people would argue that lprng is much simpler). It's up to you. I assume, that you want cups.
(2) Only one of the printing systems you have installed should be started by your system at boot time. In order to start at boot time a daemon (server software) will have to be executable.
# chmod u+x /etc/rc.d/rc.cups (as root)
(3) Start the service:
# /etc/rc.d/rc.cups restart
(4) Follow the quickstart tutorial on
http://www.linuxprinting.org. You should get almost any printer working with the information and downloads provided here. Eg, you find current drivers for many printers, open and closed source, community or vendor developed.
Good luck!
