Printer problems
Hi guys...
I know this is going to sound really simple but i can't for the life of me get my printer working on slackware 9.0.
I've just installed slack after trying out linux via red hat 7.3 and i got it working on there no problems. I'm using a HP DeskJet 930C and i've downloaded and installed hpijs-1.4.1 but still can't get it working. I know hpijs is installed correctly as i've checked but i cant find a way to add a new printer.
Can anyone help
Cheers Mike...

I believe the easiest way to install a local printer is using apsfilter.
Just go to /usr/share/apsfilter/
and type ./SETUP
If you have hpijs already installed, you should have no problems.
I've got the same printer here and it prints fine using apsfilter configuration, now I wish I could get CUPS to work hehe

I agree with arakno, using apsfilter works really well. I never could get CUPS to work on S-9 either. IMO, printing using apsfilter in slack is better than the print with XP (grin).

If you are running or have kde open up konqueror and type print:/manager. This is the easist way I have found to set up a printer over cups. Just click the add printer button in the upper left corner.

apsfilter and HPIJS
Hi there..
I've got strange problems using apsfilterconfig and hpijs/DJ9xx
as well as using DJ9xx directly.
gs (GNU v6.53) is containing both and HPIJS 1.3.1 is installed
and working using
gs ..... -sDEVICE=DJ9xx -sOutputFile=test.out test.ps
and then typing
lpr -Pblabla test.out
...all working... paper with correct drawings is coming out of the printer...
...but:
the printer blabla is appearing in all X-aplications dialogues
but it's not printing.
Well, printing starts and the printer takes a sheet of paper but
then the printer still displays 'printing...' but nothing happens
until the message 'check connection to PC...'
Thank you very very much for your help because
i'm starting to go crazy...
WalGrom.

If you did a full install from CD, whichever print spooler program was installed last will be the default. It's usually LPRng as CUPS is installed first on CD.
If you want to use CUPS instead of LPRng, just reinstall CUPS again and it will become the new default print spooler. Issue this command (as root) after reinstalling: /etc/rc.d/rc.cups restart
After CUPS is restarted, start X (as root) and bring up any web browser (Mozilla, Netscape, etc.) and type this in the location bar: http://localhost:631/admin
Log in as root with root password and choose Add Printer option. CUPS will guide you the rest of the way. Assign your printer a name (I use lp) and printer location (on my system it's /dev/usb/lp0) and give it a description. Then you'll be asked to choose the printer manufacturer (like HP, etc.) and then choose the correct print filter from the foomatic or hpijs database. After that, your printer should print like a charm. Click on Print Test page and it should work after that.

My problem is that CUPS won't work for me as a normal user but DOES work for root. When I try printing in KDE as a normal user the printing system hangs at "Initializing manager." I have to kill it to make it go away. Everything works fine as root.
BTW, where do I put the "cupsd" command so that it starts at bootup?
Thanks,
Kent

If anyone needs help setting up a printer in Slackware 9+, I wrote a small guide on fixing this a couple days ago.
http://www.thinkindependent.net/archives2/000168.shtml
"BTW, where do I put the "cupsd" command so that it starts at bootup?"
Go to /etc/rc.d/rc.cups and make sure it is executable.

Go to linuxpriting.org and it should be a breeze. There are also links to the HP webpages with specific linux installation details.
Go to your broswer and type: hhtp://localhost:631/
If you can get the CUPS screen up, then just 'add printer'. You should have the hpijs driver installed already.
If you cannot open the screen in a browser, then CUPS is not loaded. I am not sure how of the commands to get it going. If you are doing a new install, make sure you check the item to boot CUPS on start-up.

I believe I read that since lprng is installed second the lp link points there that many apps use to send the print. You need to removepkg lprng and cups then reinstall cups. You then need to make certain cups is executable. You can do this by hand or use pkgtool and go into the startup services and mark cups to start up. THen do the http://localhost:631 as root and add the printer.

I have a Canon BJC 4200 that I have not been able to make work with either CUPS or Apsfilter. I can get a test page from either but it will not print from any application. I think my problem is with filters and or print spooler but I am not sure. With CUPS i get no filter found though I have tryed selecting various ones. With Apsfilter I get a timeout error that cannot find service/link?? I don't no how to copy the error messages to post them
P.S. am using Slackware current

Read the guide I posted.
CUPS and lprng are conflicting. You must remove lprng, uninstall cups, reinstall cups, and set up your printer again. More details are provided in the guide, however. It's not that hard to do, so don't worry.
