I looked at this yesterday and had no ideas for a solution. The no solution part hasn't changed, but I have an idea for testing.
Try creating a new user in the user group (as root, useradd and answer the prompts).
Log in as the new user and test plugging in the cables. The result will tell us whether this is a global problem or is unique to the one username.
I don't know for sure which file usb events are logged to and a quick web search did not help. I think it's /var/log/messages (at least on my Slackware laptop, that seems to be where USB plugins are listed). You might take a look at that file to see if you can find anything helpful.
