You may run into another problem with old cartridges. A lot of models have a built-in expiry date on their OEM cartridges and they aren't accepted by the printer after that.

If you don't like the manufacturer drivers the generic postscript drivers should work with any modern printer. Most features won't work but if all you just want to do is print a page without anything fancy it works fine.
