Preserve aspect ratio on a widescreen LCD monitor

I'm thinking about getting an LCD monitor (widescreen) but want to use it with my current machines (one linux thinkpad R51 and a Dell desktop) both of which do not support the widescreen aspect ratio.

Is it possible to preserve the aspect ratio (4:3) on the LCD so that it doesn't get stretched?

Currently, for the linux thinkpad, I have the i810 Intel drivers. Is there a setting to configure this?

Thanks!

I think most LCDs give you that option, though I've seen a few that don't.
