pppd error on slack 10.2 with Intel536EP modem

I have recently been having some problems with my modem on the family computer (Windows XP). I want to try and get it to work under linux to see if the problem is just Windows itself (A week ago the connection was fine). I have downloaded the latest Intel536EP modem driver, and inserted the module. It created the device file /dev/536ep on compilation/installation. I have tried using this device file and linking it to /dev/modem. I used pppsetup for configuration. I tried both /dev/modem and /dev/536ep. When I run 'ppp-go' and 'tail -f /var/log/ppp' I get "write failed: Bad address". This seems to happen when the chat program is running. Any ideas on how to fix this?

Thanks

What kernel are you using, 2.4 or 2.6?

Anyway, this page might help you out to an extent... although it's for Ubuntu, the basics are there to get your modem working.

2.4.31 is my kernel... I have looked at that page before, but didn't get me far. I have searched a lot, but there are not many, if any, that address this problem directly. Just wodnring if anyone else had my prob in the past.
