On recent versions of slackpkg there is a "check-updates".

This will basically inform you if there have been any new entries in the ChangeLog.

Assuming you are not running current then pretty much the only time packages are released are for security updates.

If you see changes then simply run
"slackpkg update && slackpkg upgrade-all" (or upgrade patches)

I looks like Slackware is almost turning into a source based distro.. Not that I mind since I prefer building stuff from source.
