AND,
I miss performance indicators while installation with finish ETA ?
How can they in FreeSBD have it and we can't?

Maybe we could model it after windows, where after an hour the progress indicator completes only to leave you waiting for another 15 minutes!
I personally like the < 20min installs and don't really miss the indicator.

I had an MS install which had the indicator going backwards after nearing 80% and then back forth!
imagine my surprise!

No, I was thinking the BSD style (ever tried BSD install?)

No (worthy) install completes (even only decompress) in 20 minutes on a PII or my Gecko EduBook

I have used Slackware since 1996 when I got it with "Linux Unleashed". In every install I have fought with dependencies. I am in the midst of fighting with 13.1 and have a udev that cannot boot tmpfs.

1. Serial mouse driver that does not require that the kernel have serial port drivers enabled.
I have been burned by this twice that I can remember (and probably 3 times at least).
I expect that serial ports would be included by default, and they are not.
Repeated searching of the menuconfig to find the serial port driver enable, it is buried and not all that obvious.

2. Not being able to decide if a package should be installed because of insufficient information. (I have yelled at the screen, "Don't just leave off there, tell me what the alternative is"). There is too much expectation that the installer can just do an internet search on the spur of the moment, right in the middle of install, and I cannot.

I get warnings that I probably want this package, but what happens if
I DO NOT install udev?
I NEED useful information about the alternatives . Actually, I expect that no one at Slackware has actually tried the alternative, thus the open ended warning.

3. Documentation that points you to a web site. USELESS. (I have a dialup modem, on another machine, on another floor of the building, which runs Win98. For anything big it is a trip to the library computer, 10:1 difference in download speed.) The reason I buy a 4 or 6 CD set is to have everything I need on CD.

4. Dropping a package in the latest version that I was using in the current version.

5. Not including sunsite in the distro. I know it is getting too large, but that CD was highly valued as it saved me much online time (I have dialup modem).

To have the bootsplash as others have also pointed out you will need to patch the kernel:
Well, you could use grub and patch it instead of the kernel and have a grub bootsplash.

Back on topic, things I don't like about Slackware.. hmm... well can't really complain, it is what it is and doesn't pretend to be anything else.

too stable

have to keep track of install notes

install new release, config configs, tweak kernel, couple other slight tweaks, maybe a couple slackbuilds

then it just runs and runs and runs

had a wireless ibm a21m thinkpad vintage 2000 setup with slackware 12.2/2.6.27.7 to do web, email, recipes, spreadsheet, calendar, xmms; uptime 262 days until stupid power died for an extended period

Nowadays, slackware tends to go bleeding edge. I'd prefer conservative, well tested, stable way.

Hi,

'Bleeding edge' is from a personal viewpoint. One mans view will be entirely different from another point which will depend on the environment.
