port 21 busy

I am trying to install pure-ftpd on a new Slackware 9.1 box.
I get an error that the address is busy.
nmap from the network tells me that port 21 is open.
I have removed both pure-ftp and proftp from the system.
How can I find out what is listening to port 21?

If I remember corectly I think slack has an ftp server enabled by default. I want to say it is proftp, but I can't remember. You should be able to disable this by changing one of those inetd scripts in /etc/rc.d ( i *think* :: been a while since I configured my system and I am not on it right now.).

Code:
netstat --listening -p | grep ftp
Perhaps you need to restart inetd after installing your FTP server.

Code:
ps -ef | grep inetd
...and after that, run kill -HUP process id of inetd to restart your new FTP daemon.

Thanks for the netstat incantation.
Yes it was inetd that was calling the non existant proftpd in inetd.conf

I have now remove pure-ftpd and reinstalled proftpd. With pure-ftpd the machine froze after an hour or so, nothing in the logs
