Pointer randomly disappears - Synaptics Touchpad

Slackware-current

On my laptop I have a touchpad which /proc/bus/devices/input identifies as an AlpsPS/2. It was automagically configured when I started X the first time with tapping and scrolling working fine. Very impressive.

Unfortunately, my wife's laptop has a touchpad which is identied as a Synaptics touchpad. On launching X scrolling did not automatically work. In this brave new world of not using xorg.conf I could not use the techniques I had in the past for correcting this problem. Instead I used 11-x11-synaptics.fdi, copying it into /etc/hal/fdi/policy and editing it to use the following two directives from the Examples section:
Code:
<merge key="input.x11_options.SHMConfig" type="string">true</merge>
<merge key="input.x11_options.VertEdgeScroll" type="string">true</merge>
I restarted hal, restarted X, and was pleased to find that scrolling worked fine.

When I came back to the computer a little later, however, the pointer had disappeared. It was still there, as icons were highlighted when moving my finger on the touchpad, but the pointer was invisible. Restarting X and hal did not make it visible again. After rebooting it was back, but then disappeared again after a while.

I imagine I could go back to using xorg.conf on her computer, but I was wondering if there is a better way.

Thanks,
Brian

I suspect a graphics hardware/driver problem.
Please post the output in /var/log/Xorg.0.log.

(==) NV(0): Using HW cursor
You have an nVidia GeForce Go 6100 using the nv kernel module that is using the hardware cursor.
I suggest installing the proprietary nVidia driver, to enable direct rendering.
If you would prefer not to do that, then try the option
Quote:
Option "HWCursor" "off"
in /etc/X11/xorg.conf. (See 'man nv' for details).

I guess I'll try that. I always try to use nv, and recently it has been working well for me. However, I had to go ahead yesterday and install the proprietary drivers on a desktop because nv couldn't handle the wide-screen monitor I just purchased.

My goal was to stay away from making an xorg.conf.

Thanks a lot.
