please help: mouse weirdness

I just recompiled the kernel & after many, many failures I seem to have one that works and is much more tailored to my requirements. Excellent.

One thing that I can't figure out - that there is no longer a link called /dev/mouse on my system and to get X window up I have to create one to point to /dev/ttyS0 (I got a serial rodent).

After a reboot the link I created was gone - so it seems as though my new kernel is cleaning /dev/mouse. Can this be? & If so, does anybody have any insights into what configuration of kernel could be responsible?

ps. Is it bad form to tell X window to look straight at /dev/ttyS0 for it's mouse info rather than going through /dev/mouse?

not bad form no, what you've probably got is devfs running which means that your /dev direcotry doesn't actually exist, it's automatically managed. if you do wish to have a /dev/mouse entry then you'll probably need to modify /etc/devfsd.conf the dynamically create that link for you.

Yes, everything is becoming slightly less murky - thank you Mr. Acid. I remember that I do have devfs compiled into my kernel. Now that I think about it though, I'm not sure why... is devfs useful?
