Anlother way to compute the size? Yes, but:

Ivandi: that could be just a matter of habit[1] but Pat doesn't use awk much in the installer. At time of writing I see an invocation of awk only in /sbin/rescan-scsi-bus that he borrowed.

Jeremy: that would need to ship numfmt in the installer.

Philip: that would need to ship bc in the installer.

No big hurdles though: awk from busybox[2] is already shipped, numfmt and bc are not that big and do not need additional dependencies.

[1]Or maybe, when he wrote most of the scripts in the installer awk was not shipped in busybox and he thought that a standalone awk plus dependencies was too heavy to be shipped, as machines had less RAM then.
[2]I didn't check if this version has the needed features though.

Well, bash and expr don't do floating point math. And awk has been around for ages.

Anyway. Hope we'll see this fixed someday without shipping octave with the installer

Cheers

For a skilled enough person, floating point math is even doable with sed.

That being said, if the installer tells me that I have 897 MB available in a partition, I don't care if it's really 896 or 898.
