Pipe only xine output to s-video. Possible?
 

Recently, I've setup my laptop through s-video/RCA to connect to my TV. With minimal tinkering, it worked perfectly. I now can keep a 1920x1200 resolution on the laptop without problems on the TV. It creates a virtual screen, so that I can move the mouse to the corners of the TV and it will move to the other portions of the laptop screen.

Now, what I would like to do is somehow pipe ONLY the xine video output to s-video - so that I could potentially have xine running in the background (which theoretically would be the only thing displaying on the TV), while I could use a browser and whatever else on my computer without being displayed.

The concept seems possible - to be able to pipe _only_ xine stdout to s-video - only I'm not sure exactly how to do it.

There is no worry about audio, as I have the laptop hooked up to my stereo next to the TV.

Any suggestions? I can provide any information that may help.

Does the TV and monitor display the same things otherwise? i.e. if you open Xine, does it open on both screens?

I'm trying to wrap my mind around how you've set up what you've set up.
If you've got some kind of dual head working, then it is pretty trivial to run xine on only one screen.

As I understand it, such thing can be possible only if videocard can create separate desktop for TV screen. This might or might not be possible on NVidia/ATI cards, I simply don't know this for sure.

Yes, both the TV and the monitor display the same screen. The connection works perfectly.

I've set it up with an S-Video adapter out of the laptop, with an RCA video cable connected to the adapter, which then connects to the RCA video input jack on the TV. I'm running Slackware so with a little tinkering of xorg.conf, my laptop display is cloned to the TV.

What I'm looking to be able to do is play a movie in xine, which would clone to the TV - but still be able to do other things on my laptop (ie... ignore the laptop display and pipe only xine output to the TV). Which, really, I don't know is possible. But it would be nice to be able to do.

I have an ATI Mobility Radeon 9700. I'll search around for what you suggested, but do you possibly have any links for more information?

No, sorry. I haven't used ATI card for a few years, and never used them too much on Linux. But I think (not sure about it) that last card I used (Radeon 9100) had options (on Windows) for configuring TV output (S-Video), and some settings for two screen mode or something similar.

Would you post your xorg.conf modifications? I'm running Slack 12.2 on and old Dell 8200 laptop with an Nvidia GeForce 2 card and S-video output.

What you are looking for is called "dual head". There are a number of options depending on your card.
