I have Pinnacle PCTV and had similar problems. Of course, I had Redhat 9.0/Kernel 2.4.20-8. I tried many things and nothing worked and finally I installed Mandrake 9.2/Kernel 2.4.22. XawTv is working now wonderfully.
If you don't want to switch to a different distro, maybe you can try with upgrading your kernel (assuming you have older version than 2.4.22). I don't know how to upgrade the kernel but someone here can explain this, or google.
At the moment i have kernel 2.4.22.
I really think that it´s not a kernel problem...
So vijayaramanl, with MAndrake 9.2, your PCTV it´s working almoast out of box, right?
What tuner and chip model do you have???
Thanks.
Mine is same as yours - Card type - 39 and tuner 33
When I do dmesg | grep bttv I get the following:

Maybe you want to compare it with yours and find out where is the problem
Hey vijayaramant, thanks for the tips...
When i do dmesg | grep bttv, i get:

When i do dmesg | grep tuner, i get:
i2c-core.o: driver i2c TV tuner driver registered.
tuner: chip found @ 0xc0
tuner: type set to 33 (MT2032 universal)
The thing is that i clean install Slackware again, and now it's working, even the radio, and all i need too doo, was to had to the XF86Config-4, after tle Load "glx", i add:
Load "v4l"
Then as as root i did:
chmod 770 radio
chmod 770 radio0
chmod 770 video
chmod 770 video0
chmod 770 ic2
To give permission to the devices, for the users be able to use them...
Login as a user, and now XawTV, and GQRadio work really grat, better them windows...
This is strange because i tried this before, and did multiple installations...
Strange good world this Linux one...
Also mi modules.config, is clean, nothing there but it seams that is no needed...
Anyway your tips was precious, because it help allot to dectect the problem...
I was right, it wasn't a kernel or drivers problem...
Again thanks...
