Picturebook VGA Problems
 

Hi, I have a sony picturebook PCG-CV1PK and after a little adventure I managed to install Slackware 12.1 (kernel 2.6.24.5. Everything is on default install and I managed to run fluxbox on it with one minor flaw, the console and the xwindow enviroment is showing 640x480 when the native resolution for this is 1024x480 (non VESA standard). I searched through the internet and found a patch to fix the resolution problem and add some other features on the laptop but it is created for kernel 2.4.17. Any ideas on how to fix this or how to apply a patch I would highly appreciate it.

Please note that I ran Backtrack which uses Slax (I think that it is a live cd version of Slackware) and it detected the non VESA standard resolution for my screen.

Running `xorgconfig` as root may help you produce a better /etc/X11/xorg.conf that may support the native resolution. Beyond that, you may have to add a custom Modeline to your xorg.conf if you still can't get it working. Search the forums for Modeline if you still cannot get it to work after running xorgconfig (or try xorgsetup).

Thank you for your reply. Even though I tried all that already and none of them had any changes on the laptop. I do have an idea though (pretty painfull but I will get to learn more on kernels). I was thinking of downloading the 2.4.16 kernel (patch compatible on the net) keep an original copy and a patched version, se the differences between them and see if I can manually do those changes on my 2.6 kernel without getting a kernel panic or sending my laptop straight to the pits of hell. If anybody else has any other ideas that will not be that time consuming PLEASE go ahead and post a reply in here. Appreciated for the support

The 2.4 kernel is VERY different than the 2.6 kernel. I highly doubt that patch is even relevant anymore. You could try it anyway, but I would just have to wish you luck if you try that route.
