Question Picking the 2.6.10 Kernel on Install ?

Hi All,

I have a sucessful install with 2.4.29, and I'm pleased, but I'd rather use the latest as I am having a little trouble with sound and I want to give it a go.

Upon install I just use the sata.i image.

How do I select the the 2.6.10 image when it asks ? And is there a sata one ?

Many Thanks,

Karl.

You can't pick it on the install from the official
Slackware-10.1 CDs...

What trouble are you having with sound?

Thanks for your reply.

I'm not 100%, but thinking about it. I don't think the Sound is being shared. Or the App I'm using, is trying to find OSS and it isn't working with ALSA.

Do you recommend using 2.6.10 ?

Cheers

Yeah, youre right. If you install Kernel 2.6.10 your Sound will PROBABLY be up and running after that.
You can find the Kernel files on the second slackware disc under testing.
regards,

edit:: re you using a intel8x0 soundcard?

Karl.
Not knowing what's wrong with your sound,
I'd suggest posting the output of these:
# lspci (as root)
$ lsmod (as user)
because your kernel must recognize your
soundchip, and you must have drivers to
run the rascal...

If your only problem is sound, that's no reason
to switch to the 2.6.10 kernel. If everything else
works with 2.4.29, then you're going to encounter
some new issues with 2.6.10. Sound works in the
kernels before 2.6.x just fine, without ALSA built
into the kernel.

The command "lspci" lists pci devices, and for your soundchip it has:
00:06.0 Multimedia audio controller: nVidia Corporation: Unknown device 00ea (rev a1)
which means it hasn't determined which nVidia soundchip you have.

The command "lsmod" lists modules, and Slackware-10.1 picked:
snd-intel8x0
as the module for your card.

You have a lot of "Unknown device" entries, which may mean you
need to get the Linux nForce Driver from NVIDIA.

So that we can be certain which soundchip we're working with,
could you post the make and model of your motherboard?

I am wondering if there will ever be an offical slack10 release with the 2.6.10 kernel Prehaps in 10.2? or maybe I am sure that slack 11 will have some kind of 2.6 kernel. I myself like 2.6, mainly for the fact that after doing any kind of recompile, I still have sound, that thats my main issue with 2.4 kernels, is that I always end up losing sound, and never found a way to get it to work again.

Judging by the release announcement for 10.1, it sounds as though the next Slackware release will be 11.0, and will include a 2.6 series kernel. So no 10.x releses with a 2.6 kernel by default.

I have installed the patched nFoce Drivers (for 2.6.10), but only for the network card..

I'll patch the Audio side of it tonight and see what happens.

My motherboard is an Asus K8N-E Deluxe.

Cheers.

Ok, I've installed the sound drivers and it said successful.

lsmod shows nvsound has started, but nothing seems to be alocated to it, i.e. no codec.

Is there anything else I need to cover ?

Cheers.

I'm not familiar with that chipset or motherboard, although
from reading about it at Asus' site it looks awesome.

However, when I go to the NVIDIA site I see only one driver
http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_n...amd64_1.0-0292
for the Linux AMD 64-bit. I gave you the link for the 32-bit by
mistake before. Still, I don't see separate drivers, but one
unified driver. Did you install a driver from somewhere else?

I've searched around LQ a bit and can't find anything that looks
like a definitive answer. Even a Google <Linux> search doesn't
really come up with much to help you. There is a site named
Linux-tested which says SuSE and RedHat work with this board.
IMO, if SuSE and RedHat will work, certainly Slackware will work.

Check the results from those tests that they've posted and see
if any of that information helps you. They didn't get the sound
working, and said there's no Linux driver.

I guess the drivers you already loaded were from Asus Linux drivers

Have you tried the ALSA instructions for the intel8x0 chipset?
That seems to be the one for nVidia chipset boards...

Nvidia has this...If you have any questions or problems, please
check the linux discussion forum. If you don't find an answer to
your question there, you can send email to linux-nforce-bugs@nvidia.com

Wish I could be more help, but this is new territory for me; and
seems like for most everyone else in the Linux community. Post
your "lspci" and "lsmod" after installing those drivers and let us
check that out again.

Thanks Chinaman.

I am using the 32bit Drivers, because Slackware doesnt have a native 64bit version yet, so I use the 32bit ones.

A quick question. Looking at another post someone mentioned hotplug, is this the PCI Hotplug, as I haven't compiled this in my Kernel (I usually do, but this time I left it out). Would this make a difference ?

Cheers.

I don't think hotplug is going to have anything to do
with onboard sound, but in case I'm wrong, here's the
resources you need to check.

man hotplug

For what it's worth, I compiled a custom 2.6.10 on my Slackware and now sound works fine with my onboard nForce chipset.

Just make sure you choose in all the options in the ALSA configuration option in
Code:
make xconfig
as modules before running the
Code:
make bzImage
command.
