phpmyadmin, apache2, slackware 9

I installed apache 2 and php4.3.2 from the packages on

phpinfo works fine, and i've set up phpmyadmin before, on different distros, so i'm pretty sure the config file is okay,
but whenever i go to <hostname>/phpmyadmin/index.html
i get
phpMyAdmin - Error
phpMyAdmin was unable to read your configuration file!
This might happen if php finds a parse error in it or php cannot find the file.
Please call the configuration file directly using the link below and read the php error message(s) that you receive. In most cases a quote or a semicolon is missing somewhere.
If you receive a blank page, everything is fine.
after clicking on the link to view the config file, the pages comes up blank, so there are no syntax errors.

i checked the permissions, and set them to the same as everthing else in htdocs,

-rw-r--r-- 1 nobody nobody 32366 Jul 7 10:17 /var/www/htdocs/phpmyadmin/

i'd appreciate any light that could be shed on this situation.
