Permissions issues with graphics card

Before whenever I had the problem with /dev/nvidiasomething having "too restrictive permissions" I had just added chmod 777 /dev/nvidia* to rc.local and fixed it. However this time it seems to either be ignoring that, or setting it back to something else later on in the boot process, as I have to type that manually every time I book. Any ideas?

I don't know Slackware. I don't know nvidia. But... could it be that your XF86config-4 is missing that?
Section "DRI"
  Mode 0666
End Section

I had this problem too. If I'm not mistaken, what I did was edit the
file... Go down to the "dri devices" section... mine looks like this:
# dri devices
Notice the "0666" after nvidia*. As far as I can remember, that's what you have to change for it work. (the default is 0660 I think).
