I may have stumbled onto something... something that is probably need to know.... the pctel modem that i have been using, requires me to constantly reinstall it every time i boot. when i install it w/ the ./setup exec. it displays the proper info when i type lsmod. but the country_code is set wrong, and i cant change it. if i try to change it the lsmod screen says its 'tainted' and i get error/warning messages.i have been using 2 pctel driver tar files... pctel-0.9.7-9-rht-6.tar.gz & pctel-0.9.7-9-rht-7.tar.gz ...both of them give me the same results. i've gone thru and altered the /etc/modules.conf file and depmod -a... and it still requires me to reinstall after the reboot. and so the country_code which is supposed to be set to 1 is set to 0 ...
weird thing... i hear the modem when i dial out w/ penggy or minicom... and it says it reached 56k... so i dont have a clue what to do...
You can define the country code at module startup time using a line in /etc/rc.d/rc.modules that looks like ...
/sbin/modprobe ptserial.o country_code=X
Likewise it says that USA is default, too =/
It looks like (from messages) that you've actually done it and it's connected. Can you post route -a after you've "connected" ? The reinstall probably runs modprobe on completion, so adding that line above should fix that problem too.
With respect to the DISPLAY problems, as root try:
Code:
xauth add :0 .
It's an unrelated issue, just means root doesn't have permission to access the desktop, basically.
ok... let me rephrase...
1) tar zxvf pctel*.tar.gz file
2) cd <directory>
3) ./configure - auto (or manual)
4) make
5) make install
6) insmod ptserial country_code=1
7) errors and it either taints or it doesnt insmod at all
8) insmod pctel (normally needs -f which means force)
9) more errors and it does taint
other method
1) ./setup
2) modify /etc/module.conf file according to instruction from README/FAQ
3) depmod -a
either way = upon reboot i still need to reinstall pctel modem driver program again. remember i'm using 2.4.x kernel and modprobe is used for 2.6.x.

anything else u want me to post... something i forgot? let me know... just make sure u give exact commands... if there is something u cant fill in... tell me what is suppose to go there as best that u can.
modprobe will work fine with both 2.4 and 2.6 kernels. If it doesn't, then something is up but you'll have to get someone else to shed light on that, i can't imagine why it wouldn't work.
Just ...
Code:
route -a
... is fine, thanks. I would expect to see an interface up if it was working, like ppp0 or similar. Can anyone shed any light on if that should happen with peng/penggy? I'm hoping that the linspire dialer automagically fixes all the problems, tbh heh.
Likewise, the xauth line needs to be exactly as i posted it, with the period.
So i'm new on Linux ! I'm new on Slackware ! and to make it totaly simple i've to use AOL or nothing !
At this time i'm finishing downloading ooo ... (thank to slackbuilds.org !)
and after i'll came on that tread !
Amilo M3438G Nvidia 6800 (after a big war i find the good one ! "NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8776-pkg1.run" ... change some line in xorg.conf) ! & now i can use the right definition 1440 x 900
I've some penggy old files ... if you needs like "penggy_0.2.1.orig.tar.gz" or "guile-1.8.1.tar.gz") because i've before find somewhere that will need it.
But at this time i'm not sure that's it'll works any more because AOL make some changes and i know that there new solution try to have a lot of information like the generic host process Win 32 Service & they try to upgrade it from the 9 version to the 10 alone without agrees !
So ... i think that it will be hard ! but nothing is impossible ... & and impossible is not French ! lol
Ok, broken english there... you are not making any sense... do me some favors:
1) go to http://www.google.com/language_tools?hl=fr
2) type what you want to post in the "Translate Text" box (in french).
3) directly under that is a drop down selection box. choose to translate from French to english.
Google's ability to translate may be better than your own. Please, I mean no disrespect. I only wish to understand you, not offend you.

If it is close to impossible to get Penggy working correctly, I will just change ISP's. Jeez, I had no idea that a company (AOL) would be so against an operating system like Linux. How stupid is their corporate office? Talk about a big financial blunder.
OK... My question now then:
Can I get online with just ppp, knowing what you know of my system? The modem can dial out (sure, i have to reinstall it every time). Is that enough, if i signup with another ISP?

Si vous voulez le rendre simple pour vous-même, ne pas employer AOL avec Linux. Changer votre fournisseur de internet service (ISP) maintenant. Je vais changer mon ISP vers la fin de ce mois.
If you want to make it simple for yourself, do not use AOL with Linux. Change your Internet Service Provider (ISP) now. I am going to change my ISP by the end of this month.
