Problem
If I check the box for pcmanfm to "manage" the desktop
conky disappears
here is the document form rox to show how to manager the desktop icons:
Pinboard support
If you want the filer to manage your desktop background then you use the --pinboard option and supply a name for the pinboard, eg:
$ rox --pinboard=MyPinboardThe pinboard configuration is saved in `~/.config/rox.sourceforge.net/ROX-Filer/pb_MyPinboard' as soon as you change it in some way (for example, by dropping a file onto the background). You can have as many pinboards as you like and switch between them by running rox again, eg:
$ rox --pinboard=MyOtherPinboardTo turn off the pinboard again, set the name to an empty string:
$ rox --pinboard=See the window manager notes if you have trouble getting the icons to display correctly. The pinboard may also be turned on and off by locating `ROX-Filer' in a filer window and choosing Enable pinboard or Disable pinboard from the menu.
I want PCMANFM to manage the desktop
but, when it does, conky starts but then gets put "behind" the PCMANFM desktop?!
at desktop startup and shutdown I can see conky blink on/off,etc
if I uncheck the box for pcmanfm to manage desktop
theres conky..LOL
My guess is that pcmanfm is using a pseudo root window loaded over the real root window on which conky is writing its display, thus obscuring it. Many of the file-managers that 'manage your desktop' work in this way.
If you run conky in its own client window, and then customise it's settings in the window manager to hide the window decorations, make it immovable/no-resize etc. then you may be able to get something approximating what you're trying to do.
Personally, I've never cared for icons on my desktop and always disable that feature. If I need a file manager then I use one in a window and keep the root window just as a backdrop, which means I get to do silly stuff like "/usr/libexec/xscreensaver/glmatrix -root &" when I'm in the mood for some bling!
