Unhappy PC only boots into Slackware64-current with specific monitor attached

Hello,

Wondering if someone has come across this issue as I did not uncover much when I searched. I have an Intel D2500CC machine running Slackware64-current with kernel 4.9.29. I installed the -current OS last week with a Vizio TV connected to the VGA port of the machine. I intended on running the machine headless (using console redirect to ttyS0 to capture console output) however when I disconnect the Vizio TV the OS attempts to boot then crashes:

[ 9.576469] Fixing recursive fault but reboot is needed!
It is as if the PC is now "married" to the Vizio TV as that is the only way I can get the machine to boot. I have two other machines, an AMD Athlon64, and AMD Phenom II x4 925, running Slackware64-current with kernel 4.9.29 headless without any issues. Any help is appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

Need more data. Generic kernel with initrd? Or huge kernel without one? Multi-lib or not?

I'm running an 14.2 box headless. But I've removed the gfxcard after install and it just works.

Running huge kernel, no initrd, and 64-bit libraries. I used the "install everything" option.

Code:
~# uname -a
Linux atomd2500cce02 4.9.29 #2 SMP Sat May 20 21:41:46 CDT 2017 x86_64 Intel(R) Atom(TM) CPU D2500 @ 1.86GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux
Thank you.

The call trace points to the framebuffer driver and the KMS (kernel mode setting) function.

The latter would explain why the other monitors trigger the bug and the Vizio doesn't; it's all to do with the resolution, which in turn depends on the native resolution reported by the monitor via EDID. Since it seems the Vizio TV returns invalid EDID data (or the cable is bad), the kernel defaults to a low resolution and the DRM driver doesn't crash.

Try blacklisting the gma500_gfx module and upgrade to a more recent kernel. A lot has happened to the Intel driver since 4.9.29.

Thank you! Blacklisting the module corrected the problem on 4.9.29. I will also upgrade the kernel, and remove the blacklisted module. I will post the results later tonight or tomorrow.

Thank you again!

Kernel 4.9.30 did not resolve the issue with the gma500_gfx module.

Thank you again! Your help is much appreciated!

I think he meant beyond the 4.9 series. Typically, you'll only see bugfixes in the patches, but for new features and adding better support for cards, those typically occur in the major releases. So, I'd try 4.11 (as 4.10 is EOL) or 4.12rc3.

I upgraded to 4.11.3 and that seems to have corrected the issue I was having. Thank you for pointing me in the right direction!
