partitioning problem

I have been trying to install Slackware and I have encountered a problem. When ever I try to make a partition the program says that there is no more room left on my hard drive, but in reality i have like 18 GB. Is there a way to fix this?

Are you saying that this is an unpartitioned HD with no other operating systems?

What program are you using to make partitions that gives you an error like that.

Well, I have XP on one of my partitions and i want to make more partitions to put Slackware on so I can dual boot both OS's. When I go into FDISK to set up the partitions it tells me there are no more blocks left even though I know i have 18 Gigs still on my computer.

First of all check with your XP how much really space left by right-clicking on =My Computer=
and going to =Manage= ->=Disk management or storage (I think)
If you do have space that you claim
1. that boot slack cdrom or floppy
2.choose suitable kernel
3. login as root
4. type cfdisk /dev/hda ->
follow instructions

it actually sounds like you need to resize your partition first. you can use qtparted if you have a knoppix live cd around

Resizing can seriously screw his XP bootsector. Not recommended

I think i may have figured out the problem......
FDISK/CFDISK isn't reconizing that i reall have a 52 gig hard drive. It's just saying that my hard drive is only 40 gig. Does this call for repartitioning or what?

You need to read up on what a partitiion is. Your entire HD is apparently in one big partition. The space you have free on that partition is not what fdisk thinks of as free space. All of the HD is taken up. That is why they say above about resizing your partition. The optimal method is to simply blast the whole thing and set up partitions then reinstall all of your OSes (Win is first). The down side is you lose everything on that WIndows partition that is there now. You can try to resize your partition. That can cause problems. I did it once years a go using partition magic and had no problems. The decision is yours on how to proceed.
