Partition Check hangs with 80gig hdd on slackware 9

okay, i have tried to install a seagate barracuda 80gig hdd into my slackware 9 box as a slave on the primary ide chanel, to no avail. when booting, it gets to the partition check:
Code:
Partition check:
 hda: hda1 hda2 hda3
 hdb:
and just hangs there. now i tried installing mandrake 9.1 onto the system, and it finds the new drive fine, along with all partitions etc. i guess my question is: what is preventing slackware 9 from finding my partitions eventhough it can initially see the drive on boot?

any help would be truly appreaciated
