Pam

Is there a way to set up a Slackware server to authenticate against an LDAP server other than PAM?

I use LDAP for authentication on the web servers and was thinking it may be useful at the server level for non root accounts. Has anyone tried changing from shadow passwords to PAM on Slack? The thing for me is that PAM is more a "wouldn't it be cool" shift versus a mission critical one, and I don't want to muck with my servers to experiment.

Thanks,
Meph

I can't say I've PAM'afied Slack but having setup a LFS box is shouldn't be too bad, and is something I'm probably going to do in the next 6 months (unless the next Slack comes with PAM that is).

You'd need to compile the PAM source along with crack lib etc etc (follow the LFS documentation if I were you), then rebuild the shadow utils and anything else that authenticates users and that should be it AFAIK. It didn't seem too bad to me.

cheers

Jamie...

(infact I'm I do have a Slack box thats running PAM but I've never really tested it properly so it doesn't count IMHO!)
