just got installed the latest version of slackware (13.1) on my Pavilion dv6. once i have start the kde enviroment i can hear the login sound, and if i were to go in to the settings-> multimedia i could alter from analog speaker to HDMI output. no issues..
somereason i didn;t like the KDE, i had to move XFCE and the trouble began, can't hear the sound... it shows the anlog output is playing (no errors) when i press the test button though, but nothing can be heared..
and the good news is just got the wireless and network is working fine.
thanks

Reason: sound card issue over ! moving on to package installation
i wish i could get in to the display in order to do that. i was installing the Gnomeslackbuild (64bit) just i after i wrote to the forum about my sound card issue in xfce. the installation completed and i have just change the /etc/initrd as explained in the site. the default value was 3 and i use to get the login option and do the startx .
since i made the change to runlevel 4 it goes automatically trying to boot to gnome and there is only black screen. tried to kill the signal by alt+ctrl+backspace but no luck at all.
is there anyway i can get back in to XFCE or terminal option to change back the setup?
Hello,
i tried all the combination keys to kill the x, however end up re installing the slackware and then installing gnome through net install. activate the gnome by running xwmconfig . working fine. will be installing the ATI propritery driver later and see how that goes along with gnomeslackbuild.
the only issue i have right now is the sound card. i have tried the above method which was suggested by bonixavier. my device list shows in the multimedia system selector is " default, STAC92xx Analog, ATI HDMI" ..no sound still.
Distribution: Slackware64-current with "True Multilib" and KDE4Town.

Rep:
If I understand you correctly, you had sound with KDE, but not with Xfce?
You are not getting sound when you try to play a music or video file with any of the multimedia players?
The sound isn't muted in the alsamixer?

its working fine now, re installing the slack did resolve the issue (not sure how did that worked anyway).
i am trying to install empathy now. hope it will work on XFCE, tried the pkgtool, every time i use the "install packages from other directory it just goes back to the prompt, no error were reported.
install package needs the tgz and i have the "empathy-2.30.2.tar.bz2" . is there any other method to install on slack?
