overlapping text in web browsers

We have slack 12 (2.6.21.5 kernel). The web browsers all have the problem of overlapping text, although firefox is worst. I found this article about it (http://kb.mozillazine.org/Text_overlaps_on_Mac)

Text overlaps on Mac

This article deals with text overlapping on Mac OS X, where text in web pages, text boxes or e-mail messages becomes jumbled. The problem may be caused by duplicate fonts. To fix it:

1. In the Applications Folder, open Font Book
2. In the "Collection" column, select "Computer"
3. All duplicates will have a bullet after them. Use the command key to select all of the fonts with duplicates
4. Choose Edit -> Resolve duplicates
5. Restart Firefox/Thunderbird/whatever
I don't know how to check for duplicate fonts in slackware - or maybe the problem is from something else? Sometimes the overlap causes one line to be on top of another.

Help appreciated.

I used to have this problem on one specific web site when I used large fonts in Firefox. The web site had settings for the pixel where text would start. When I displayed the pages text from one column would spread over the start of the next column. The result was that lines of text were printed on top of each other.

Try using a smaller font and see what happens.

I've tried smaller fonts but they get so small I can't see them and the space that the webpage uses ends up a small fraction of the screen.

You could get a bigger screen.

You didn't say if this problem is with all web pages or just one. If it is just one web site then the problem is caused by the web page designer. Using smaller fonts is the only thing that I know of to fix the problem.

If it is only some but not all websites doing this in FireFox or you might consider using an extension like Stylish or GreaseMonkey to override the default CSS. This requires you to pick up some rudimentery knowledge of CSS and javascript, (not a bad thing) though and adds yet another extension to your FireFox :/

I remember when FireFox was the lightweight alternative to the bloatware out there :(

It happens on other websites and with other linux/slackware browsers. It doesn't happen with windows 98 + internet explorer - which I'm forced to use when it comes to reading certain pages that are important for me to be able to read.

I should add that internet explorer extends the page width beyond the screen while firefox and konqueror don't use the whole screen width.
