Go to 'Processor type and features --->', 'Processor family (Core 2/newer Xeon) --->'. Newer kernels may have more options, but Core 2 is probably the one you want.

I've found a patch

https://github.com/graysky2/kernel_gcc_patch

that add the support for the gcc -march=corei7-avx

corei7-avx
Intel Core i7 CPU with 64-bit extensions, MMX, SSE, SSE2, SSE3, SSSE3, SSE4.1, SSE4.2, AVX, AES and PCLMUL instruction set
support.

(I don't kwnown all that flags, but are more that core2 flags )


Why there is not an option: "custom march" or "autodetect" (-march=native), in processor type list? (or exists a "cflags options" ?)

How many optimization I can do for 12G ram and the following hardware:

Yeah, that could help compiling faster something that's already compiled :-)

PS I would only do that during winter, as I don't want to kill my old T61 (if only it had a core i7 inside, of course...)

I was thinking of compiling glibc using optimized CFLAGS as well. For sure, don't use any unsafe CFLAGS for it. Use something like "-march=native -O2 -pipe -fPIC", -fPIC for 64-bit builds.

It is a bit complicated, and you will have to use a Slackbuild. You CANNOT uninstall glibc or your system will cease to function until you re-install it. EVERYTHING depends on glibc.

I've compiled the glibc with slackware slackbuilds by adding -march=corei7-avx to the already existants flags:
OPTIMIZ="-O3 -fPIC -march=corei7-avx"

then installed with upgradepkg.

I'm reading wikipedia to know where I can see advantages.

with -march=mcore2 I may see better performance on multimedia applications (due the SSE1-2-3 feature), but in kernel space I can found the drivers, not the applications.
But all drivers have performance limited from the hardware. Recompiling the ethernet driver with i7 extensions I can't reach 200mbit

I do NOT recommend '-O3', as it can lead to unstable binaries. This means that programs could crash randomly, and you'll have a very hard time diagnosing it. To use '-O3' on glibc ... not the best idea.

Some of you might not be surprised, but to the OP, try different flags and benchmark them - you might be extremely surprised by the outcome performance-wise and size-wise. For example, I found -Os produced almost the same performance as -O2 in one of my applications, but a way smaller binary.

You won't come back of the time you used to recompile glibc in millions years of optimized glibc use vs the non optimized one.

but currently the Pat's glibc slackbuild uses -O3 by default, so you already have a glibc built with -O3
