I am running Slack 8.0 and at one time tried to install Opera
but was not lucky enough to have it running smoothly, like
Firebird which is lean and fast. So I deleted it and forgot
about it. Maybe you have better luck. Cheers!

Generally with Slack, if you can't find a Slackware Package (*.tgz) then you should compile from source (*.tar.gz)
Nowadays, Slackware can handle rpms, but when you get into dependancies and whatnot, it is more trouble than it's worth, so I'd recommend sticking with compiling from source.

I had the Slackware qt package installed (used by kde and qcad). If you have qt installed you can also use "QT Shared RedHat 8/SuSE 8.1+/Mandrake 9" as these distros used gcc 3.x.

You can also use the Static RPM version and run RPM2TGZ then use installpkg and you're there.
It's usually best (IMHO) to get the static version so you don't come up missing a library or two (using the shared version).
