Lightbulb OpenHost

Hi everyone, my name is lancel00t. I fancy myself a beginner at OS development. I recently put together a Slackware based OS available in 4 flavors: x86-stable/current and x86_64-stable/current. To read about all of the features in detail or download an ISO check out http://openhostos.dyndns.org. In short OpenHost is mostly about gaming performance and ease of use with Wine and also system security. For example, at boot in live mode or installed Shorewall will be loaded and will protect most of your network interfaces. I am excited to hear your feedback once you give it a spin!

Thanks,
lancel00t

I noticed this when looking at your site :

The Future:
I am presently working on an original linux distro based
on the LFS Book.
I recomend LFS as well as the [A/B/C]LFS variants as they are a wonderful learning experience. One option that is not as widely known is DIY Linux by Greg Schafer which is a slightly different method of building a LFS. Greg is a very approachable guy who took the time to reply to me when I mailed him having completed a DIY build. I am not associated with these projects in any way.

I have built LFS, CLFS, BLFS and DIY several times but automated builds like ALFS and another version I used for DIY fascinate me. Being able to script the process saves a lot of time and makes rebuilding simple.

Regarding DIY v LFS it's beneficial to see different ways of achieving a source based distro build.

One thing I would be careful with is the requirements of licenses and trademarks. You need to be sure you are following requirements when publishing. I see you mention several base products and names on your site. I appreciate you are probably just giving information but this is a complex area and you should want to do the right thing. I am no expert in these subjects so can offer no further advice but it shouldn't be too hard to ensure compliance and permission.

Good luck with your endeavours.

Thanks for the reply. In line with your comments about licensing and trademarks I updated the website. Ultimately I would like to release a FSF compliant GPL OS. Doing such a thing will require some research. I also agree with your comments about LFS/B/A/C and DIY. Work on my LFS based OS is progressing albeit slowly, which is a good thing. I would like to make my from scratch OS as complete and interesting as possible. A new release/update of OpenHost is on the way before the second week of Nov. I'm excited.
