OpenGL terminology question

I'd like to apologize in advance for the length of this post. I'm sure I have included way too much command output. I'm not very sharp with the whole video thing.

To give some details, I am currenlty running Slackware 10.1 (full install) with Dropline Gnome. Kernel version is 2.6.10ck (haven't had the free time to upgrade yet :)) I have an NVidia GeForce 5700 LE running with the Nvidia binary driver.

My question is probably very simple. I am looking to build a MythTV box in the future and while looking up the requirements for the modules, I see that OpenGL is a requirement. From the README supplied with mythgallery source:

Quote:

(make sure you have OpenGL support for your graphics card available
and enabled if you choose this option. You can check this under X11
using xdpyinfo or glxinfo. Also ensure that QT has been built with
OpenGL support)
Last things first, I check out qt.SlackBuild and see the
Quote:

-enable-opengl
switch for ./configure. Gotta assume that means that QT has been built with
OpenGL support.

Checking xdpyinfo:

Going on, from the README supplied with mythmusic source:

OpenGL - Just about everyone should have this already (?).

So my question(s): Do I have OpenGL? If so, which package provided it?

Thanks in advance, and sorry again about the length of the post.

Did you install 3d-accelerated graphics drivers? If so, you can use OpenGL.

egag 03-02-2005 05:41 PM

guess you have it :

egag@Slack21:~$ grep libglx /var/log/packages/*
/var/log/packages/x11-6.8.2-i486-1:usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libglx.a

so...libglx is in the base X package.

it's loaded by the -- Load "glx" -- statement in xorg.conf.

but i also saw you have a nvidia-graph card.
do you have the driver installed ?

if so:
it's not working correct ( "direct rendering=no" in glxinfo )
and i think nvidia drivers have a replacement for libglx, wich is installed with the driver.

hope this is of some help....

I installed the Nvidia binary driver. So then you are saying that if the Nvidia binary driver is installed, that all OpenGL dependencies are good to go?

egag:

Code:

shilo@shilo2:~$ grep libglx /var/log/packages/*
/var/log/packages/x11-6.8.2-i686-1dl:usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libglx.a

So libglx is OpenGL?

All of a sudden, I feel like a complete beginner all over again.

I do have an Nvidia card. I have installed the binary driver for it.

Some notes:

There aren't any (EE) errors in /var/log/Xorg.0.log

My video seems to be accellerated:
Code:

shilo@shilo2:~$ glxgears
14006 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2801.200 FPS
14443 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2888.600 FPS
4620 frames in 5.0 seconds = 924.000 FPS
1260 frames in 5.0 seconds = 252.000 FPS
1400 frames in 5.0 seconds = 280.000 FPS

This is with maximizing the window halfway through. This is not working?

Some relevant snippings from /etc/X11/xorg.conf:
Code:

Section "Module"
    Load        "dbe"
    Load        "v4l"
    Load        "extmod"
    Load      "glx"
#    Load      "dri"
    Load        "record"
    Load        "xtrap"
EndSection

Section "Extensions"
  Option  "Composite"    "Enable"
EndSection

Section "Device"

        Identifier  "Card0"
        Driver      "nvidia"
        VendorName  "nVidia Corporation"
        BoardName  "Unknown Board"
        BusID      "PCI:1:0:0"

        Option      "RenderAccel"        "True"
        Option            "HWCursor"          "True"
        Option      "CursorShadow"      "True"
        Option      "UseEdidFreqs"      "True"
        Option      "NoLogo"            "True"
        Option      "AllowGLXWithComposite" "True"
#        Option      "DRI"              "True"
EndSection

And the module is loading fine:
Code:

shilo@shilo2:~$ lsmod|grep -i nvidia
nvidia              3463484  12

So the line from glxinfo "direct rendering: No" means that something isn't working? Hate to ask, but any ideas what it could be?

You mention that the NVidia driver has a replacement for libglx. Does this look right?

Code:

root@shilo2:/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions# ls -l
total 3699
-r--r--r--  1 root root 2423010 2005-02-10 20:10 libGLcore.a
-r--r--r--  1 root root  16468 2005-02-10 20:10 libdbe.a
-r--r--r--  1 root root  32402 2005-02-10 20:10 libdri.a
-r--r--r--  1 root root  166504 2005-02-10 20:10 libextmod.a
-r--r--r--  1 root root  488048 2005-02-10 20:10 libglx.a
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root      18 2005-02-14 11:28 libglx.so -> libglx.so.1.0.6629*
-rwxr-xr-x  1 root root  577444 2005-02-14 11:28 libglx.so.1.0.6629*
-r--r--r--  1 root root  25824 2005-02-10 20:10 librecord.a
-r--r--r--  1 root root  39346 2005-02-10 20:10 libxtrap.a

Looking at the dates (and the .6629) makes me think that hese are the NVidia libglx replacements. I do notice that they end in .so, while evrything else ends in .a (including what I would presume is the original libglx). Is this the way it is supposed to be?

Thanks again for all the help. Sorry to only have more questions in response to your answers.

You'll have to Google for the specifics of how and why, but if memory serves, nVidia bypass the Direct Rendering Interface (DRI) for rendering, whereas ATi's drivers don't. That's why you don't need or have DRI enabled in your xorg.conf for your binary nVidia driver.

I think that is right. Why else would I get the high numbers from glxgears?

I believe I have all my answers. I just needed to look at http://www.opengl.org/applications/installing.html#9
Quote:

Q. What do I need to install?

A.If OpenGL is not working for you correctly and your PC or laptop does have an OpenGL-savvy graphics card, all you should need to do is install the latest OpenGL driver from your graphics card manufacturer. Simply go to your graphics card manufacturer's website and download and install their latest OpenGL driver. If you cannot find the driver, send an email to the technical support department of the card manufacturer. If you are still having trouble, check the OpenGL Hardware, Software, & Gaming Message Board.
So then, it seems that the OpenGL dpendency is solved simply by having the proper driver for your video card. Here I was looking for opengl*tgz.

Thanks to everyone. Maybe next time I'll think to read the web site listed in the README BEFORE posting longwinded questions.

Off to compile some more,

well...you are ok on the graphics.
hw.-acceleration works ok. and you use the glx-lib. from nvidia.

glxinfo comes in the same package as the libglx.a so i think, using the nvidia lib.'s
it gives not the right info.

and " opengl=libglx " ???

that's a good Q.
( take a look at " $slocate glx " , if you have a db. for slocate )
there'not much there.....
i think it's "just" a lib. that's used by graphics-programs to draw primitives ( like lines and planes ) on the screen.

and you can use it without hw-rendering.
in that case graphics all will be calculated by the main processor instead of using the graphic processor.
( so, specially using 3d graphics, it will be very slow... )

but the more i think of it, the more i know i have to do some reading
on that.
