OpenGL only half working...? Slack 12.0, GeForce4 MX

I have a weird problem with 3D stuff.

glxgears works fine, gives me about 1600 fps, KWin translucency/shadows work fine. But a lot of things only seem to be half-working.
For example, in the OpenGL -> Euphoria screensaver (KDE screensaver dialogue), the modes 'Grid', 'Cubism', 'M_Theory', UHFTEM' and 'Kaleidescope' seem to work fine, while the modes 'Regular', 'Bad Math', 'Nowhere' and 'Echo' just give me a black screen.

In the Neverball game, things seem to work, good fps, etc, but only a very small amount of items are actually rendered at all. It seems very broken - most of the screen is just blank, and there are no textures, no text, etc...

I'm using Slackware 12.0 with the generic-smp-2.6.21.5 kernel.
I have a Soltek SL-75MRN-L motherboard with an nVidia nForce2 chipset + integrated GeForce4 MX graphics.
Using the latest [legacy] nVidia driver from the nVidia website.

My /var/log/Xorg.0.log is in the following post (this post was too long for the system to handle).

Any ideas?

Update on the problem:
3d graphics without textures work fine, but in any openGL screensaver when I enable the 'use textures' checkbox, I just get a blank screen.

SO it seems to be a problem with textures.

Any ideas? anyone??

Cheers
Forrest

Forrest, I don't know diddly about OpenGL, but I wanted to post to show we're not an ignorant bunch who are ignoring you. The only thing I can suggest would be perhaps trying an older version of the nvidia drivers just in case they've managed to introduce some bugs into the latest ones that are causing your problems. Another option might be to update your Slackware to 12.1 to see if the newer kernel/xorg versions work better for you, though that's obviously more work.

I have a agp 8x FX5200 myself, which is almost but not quite old enough to need the legacy drivers. I've been wondering whether to get an updated card (something like a 7600) while AGP cards are still available, you might want to consider that option to bring yourself slightly more up to date and put a little extra longevity into your system.

Have you tried Nvidia's own support forums? I may be wrong as we have some pretty clever people here, but I think you'd be more likely to find an answer there than here.

You have to use the old drivers, nVidia doesn't support rather old cards in new drivers.

He is. If you look at his first post, he clearly states that he is using the 'Legacy' driver.

Just using some legacy driver isn't enough, you have to use a certain legacy driver for some old cards.

http://www.freshports.org/search.php...aseinsensitive

That's FreeBSD for example, they are supporting two different kind of legacy driver, some for very old card and some for later cards. That's the policy of nVidia, sorting out 'very old' cards. And some drivers in the future you will have no driver at all.

Fair enough, though the problem comes when you need a newer driver for the newer kernel/xserver version. I guess nvidia want you to go buy a nice shiny new card, so there's little value in it for them to make the older cards useful to people. I look forward to the day when we get 3d acceleration in the Open Source card drivers that come with xorg.

I just got a new box recently, but my machine before that used a geforce 4mx and I never had any problems with it. From what I can recall, I tried to install one of the newer linux drivers from nvidia once and the installation told me it couldn't detect any cards. So I think you'd be getting the same message if the driver wasn't one that supports your card. It sounds to me almost like your onboard video is crapping. In the last box before the geforce 4mx I had a geforce 2 card that had some really odd things going on and it was just that the card was going bad.

Would you mind posting your xorg.conf as well?

Have you tried turning off the composite extension?

One thing that has occurred to me is that you may be running out of video memory. I believe the MX only has 64MB of video memory. Trying to run composite and OpenGL apps at high resolution/colour depth might just be asking too much of your card.

If turning composite off doesn't help, you might want to try dropping down to a lower resolution and colour depth which would also ease the memory usage.

Other than that, Your xorg.conf looks pretty normal.

Aha

I can set my video memory to use up to 128mb (I have integrated video).

I'll try that, along with lowering the resolution, and see if it helps.

I doubt it will as I have used openGL fine on a 32MB nvidia card with the same resolutions for ages

I actually turned the composite extension on to see if it would mak a difference

Hi guys...

Update on the problem... I downgraded to the NVIDIA-Linux-x86-71.86.04-pkg1.run driver from the NVIDIA-Linux-x86-96.43.05-pkg1.run driver I was using (sorry, I just pasted the package names, I think the actual versions are 7186 and 9643 or something).

Now all openGL games and screensavers work perfectly, but the stuff like window transparency and shadows has taken a big performance hit. Which doesn't worry me as I don't use the fancy effects

Thanks for your patience... it's fixed now, yay

I know I'm dragging up an old post here. But, in nvidia forums, well, the geforce4mx driver has been broken for YEARS. Nvidia's response: 1) Oh, that's a shame. or 2) Your card is defective.

If you want games AND a fancy desktop, try to get a patched up 87.76 driver. This has non-broken games and composite extension, and is MUCH faster then the 71.86 series.
