I have found that I was able to stop the boot up sequence by typing out
Linux emergency

Which is really cool!

Problem is, I got to /etc/rc.d/
found rc.modules - but VI doesn't work!

is there another way of editing a file?

Do I find VI firstly, then point it to rc.d or is there a simpler way of editing like edit or copy con etc? (Im showing my DOS background now!)

you could use mc if you are used with edit

But it is weird that vi is not present, did you try elvis ?
You can also use pico, nano, emacs depending on what is installed

or do :

cp /etc/rc.d/rc.modules /etc/rc.d/rc.modules.orig
cat /etc/rc.d/rc.modules |grep -vi agp >newfile
mv -f newfile /etc/rc.d/rc.modules

Im guessing that its not got as far as defining the PATH as yet, so it doesn't know it exists.

Anyway - thanks so much for your help tonight - I will carry on working on it tomorrow night, but at least I feel confident thatI know exactly what's wrong.

is there a thank you button to press or a rating system used on this forum so I can express my thanks?
