old slack user trying to use verizon DSL...no luck
This seems to be a common problem...getting verizon dsl to work with slackware. I checked similar threads, but they all seem to be using a router. (this is strange, but I might be too. I ordered the barebones package from verizon- just modem and they sent a westell model 6100 that on the back says 'dsl router'. If it is just a modem, would I still be able to log in (using suse) by typing 'http://192.163.1.1' ? cuz I can!) I did a google for the westell 6100 and I did find something that said it is a router??? I wonder if I had gotten the router package for another $20 if I would have still go the westell 6100???
So maybe my subject should have read ' is this a modem or a router'? I was reading a recent thread 'slackware 10.2 nic problem' and there was a lot of info there which I feel may be just what I need to do to get this thing on line. But since he said he was setting up a server behind a router I'm not sure if it would solve my problem.
I have been using Suse for the past month because it automagically got me online, but I miss my old Slack 9.1 setup. My pc has a hard drive switch and 3 hd's so I am able to keep the distro's separate. I'll go back and visit my slack setup and look around at how I got things set up and remember how much fun it was doing that...I reallly have learned a lot about linux and computers just from messing with Slack. I have tried RH, Debian, Mandrake/Mandriva, Suse, Knoppix, Ubuntu .... but I didn't learn a thing because it all just worked right from the start....that's ok for some folks but I wanted to learn some of this stuff. I miss Slackware....
I have to go to work so I can't mess with some of the info/commands to try from the recent thread I mentioned above. I am going to treat this thang as a router.... wish me luck..... slack rules

Check the specific model number on the bottom of the device. 6100 is a series. Google the specific model number. The 6100 are basically a modem/router where the routing can be disabled on some models. If it's set up and used as a modem you'll have to configure PPPoE.

The way I understand it, there is no such thing as a "DSL Modem." It's just a nickname everybody uses because they USED to use it when people were crossing over from "modems used for dialup."
I'm pretty sure that I don't have your model, but I'm from Virginia and I got the barebones package from Verizon about 4 years ago. I installed Slack 10.0 on my computer, configured the kernel to use the Broadcom ethernet card in my motherboard, ran the config files for the Roaring Penguin PPPoE package that comes in 10.0, and everything worked so smoothly that I thought I must have broken something and hadn't found it yet. I have been really happy with the ease of setup... for exactly the problem you're having!

PS: I can't give more specifics... I'm on a boat in the Pacific Ocean, getting ready to launch a satellite.

re: verizon modem/router
Thanks for the replies. When I first installed 9.1, I reconfigured the kernel and really trimmed it down. This was when I still was using dial-up. What should I look for? I have two ethernet cards, one onboard and one plugin.
When I reconfigured the kernel, I went thru the whole list and I really reduced boot-up time. I'll have to go through my notes and bookmarks to refresh my memory so I don't mess up.
I had 10.1 on another hd and I think I may have tried the roaring penquin PPPoE and still couldn't get online. I'll keep trying.
Again, tnx masonm and vonst....vonst good luck with the launch

With all the DSL services I have used it id'd the connection as a regular ethernet connection. No need to add the adsl-up dialogue or anything.

finally online with Slackware and Verizon DSL!!!
Thinking that I may have to reconfigure the kernel, I checked on the Slackware site and looked in the handbook for info about the kernel and how to make minor changes. I have already reconfigured kernels a few times in the past, but forgot most of it. But I noticed the section on Network Hardware Configuration. It said go to /etc/rd.d/rc.modules and to find the nic and uncomment the line. (amazing) Then it talked about Static IP and editing the /etc/rc.d/rc.ineth1.conf. I added my IP Address, netmask , yes for using dhcp and finally the gateway.
Success and if sure is great to be back using Slackware. Thanks for all the info and help.
ciao
Neil
