Sorry for the late reply!
It was indeed a heating problem, as suggested by several of the posts. I checked with htop but at no point did RAM usage exceeded 700Mb (usually at about 350Mb) and only a few Mb of swap space were used. After that I followed the temperature with the xfce add-on and saw that it rises very fast. At some point after 65 degrees Celsius the computer shuts down. I solved the problem by opening the case and pointing a fan straight to the motherboard.
As about the time needed for compilations, I may note that xulrunner took 8 hours to compile and chromium about 24! I know that I could download and install pre-compiled packages, but where would be the fun in that? I use my old computer to experiment and learn, that's why I installed Slackware (I've also left a partition open to install Arch in the future) and do everything the hard way...
Thank you all very much for the suggestions and insights!

Incidentally, does anyone know if there is a problem with the tsocks SlackBuild? I followed the instructions exactly, but i only get
Code:
/bin/sh mkinstalldirs "/tmp/SBo/package-tsocks/usr/man/man5"
mkdir /tmp/SBo/package-tsocks/usr/man/man5
/usr/bin/ginstall -c -m 644 tsocks.conf.5 /tmp/SBo/package-tsocks/usr/man/man5/
cp: cannot stat 'tsocks.conf.{simple,complex}.example': No such file or directory

This have no relation to overheating obviously :-)
Currently on slackbuilds.org for Slackware 14.1 is available tsocks-1.8beta5, and this is beta, which may have no man and info pages, and any other documentation. Possibly this is a bug/typo in the Makefile.
