Ok I have tried all that I know of to change my resolution but it still doesn't work.
 

First I am not a n00b to linux, just slackware.
Ok now that that is done, I have tried all that I know of to change my resolution and I still am stuck on a horrid 800x600, I finally got an answer from compaq for my monitors refresh rates and entered them into xf86config correctly. Here is my section for my resolution

As you can see it should be 1024x768 but I am sure that it is not because my gaim window takes up the whole screen.
I can lower my resolution but I can't go higher.

So does anyone have an idea on how to fix this?

I am using slackware9.0 if that helps any.

hrmm well maybe you could try just have 1024x768 specified in your config and remove 800x600 and 640x480 and see what happens...

Ummm ok but will I have to edit the backups as well or can I leave them be.

no you don't need to edit backups just the config you are using

I just did that then restarted then when I typed startx I got
no usable modes

And it wouldn't start.

Now I can't even start a gui.
So now I need to know how to edit my XF86Config file from a command line.
Yes I know most people should know that BUT I did most of my editing from gedit in a gui.

Sounds to me that the refresh rates are wrong. Are you sure you got the correct info from Compaq? :) My personal experience is that actual specs can be pretty hard to get when it comes to "packaged" computer systems - my first PC was a Packard Bell something (I soon realized why people called it "Crappard Hell"), and I had to physically inspect the innards of the damn box to find out what motherboard/chipset it really was. What did I learn from that? Always buy the separate parts, carefully chosen, and assemble yourself. :)

Anyway, try to find out your monitor capabilities from within Windows then - there should be a couple of apps you can do this with.

Oh, and to edit your XF86Config file, you can go about in different ways (there are a few editors to choose from). The easiest is probably pico...su and then go

pico /etc/X11/XF86Config

and the rest is pretty self-explanatory. :) Good luck.

Depends on what your favourite editor in the terminal is... My personal favourite is vi... So:

vi /etc/X11/XF86Config

I agree with nvn regarding your refresh rate too. A better way to check is just by looking at the back of your monitor. Manuals tend to be outdated, but the info on the actual equipment itself is 99.5% of the time correct.

Ok I just checked the back of my monitor and guess what, it's not there.
I can't check the manual because I got this computer for free and didn't get any.
So I am going to try some winodws programs for that.

In the monitor section of XF86Config, I have
HorizSync 31.5-68.7
VertRefresh 50-85
(I have a crappy 17" TARGA monitor, so yours wont be exactly the same, but have you got something roughly comparable to this?)

The file /var/log/XFree86.0.log may give you some hints as to what is wrong.

What model is your monitor and graphics card?

I have a compaq MV520 15" monitor and a intel extreme graphics controller.
Someone finally told me the rates and guess what compaq was wrong so I now have that fixed but I still don't get what is wrong.
I think it might be the drivers so I looked online for drivers and I am yet to find any.

If anyone knows where I can get some drivers for my graphics controller PLEASE PLEASE tell me.

That is so weird. I wonder why I never found it when I was looking for drivers for my chipset. Maybe it's because my chipset isn't listed here
