Cool office on slackware

Calligra Sheets is not loading my sheets (rather huge files), and i do not want to use Google.
Which office software can u recommend in terms of stability and ease of upgrades?

Was using LibreOffice previously, worked well on Win.

If you're happy with LibreOffice, then the most convenient option would be to use AlienBob's packages:
https://slackware.nl/people/alien/sb...4/libreoffice/

NB: -current upgrades sometimes break 3rd packages. IIRC, upgrades (shared library .so-version bumbs) of icu4c and boost affect a previously installed LibreOffice. The solution is to install AlienBob's icu4c-compat, boost-compat, and poppler-compat packages (as explained in this blog post: https://alien.slackbook.org/blog/lib...-version-bump/ )

When I upgraded from 14.2 to 15.0, I also upgraded LibreOffice to 7.3 using the packed available from SlackOnly:

https://slackonly.com/pub/packages/1...e/LibreOffice/

I do not typically worry about updating office software in a hurry. SlackOnly does not update all that often, but that isn't a problem for me. As far as I can tell, they basically use the build packages from SlackBuilds. Note that over at SlackBuilds, a search for libreoffice will turn up two variants: LibreOffice and libreoffice (main package, language package, and help package). Slackonly used to have both variants for 14.2, but only the LibreOffice variant is currently there for 15.0. I think the SlackBuilds explanations tell you enough to figure out the differences between the two versions.

https://slackbuilds.org/result/?sear...office&sv=15.0

I tried AlienBob's package, but when I grabbed it back in February it did not include the code for Base that allows for local/internal database files - it only allows connectivity to database servers for data. It would not open my existing odb files. Something to do with Oracle's JDK packages, and not building that into the package. There may be a work-around for that, or it may have changed in updated packages, but my solution was the SlackOnly package (which saved me from building my own using SlackBuilds).

Thanks for this. I am normally not the normal office user, but do need SOME stuff from time to time.

Tried the AlienBob's version, didn't work for me either.

Using slackware on a desktop is a great thing, but i already have many packages to be aware of when updating, so i'll ditch the idea of using office (other than the pre-installed one). The google version works well enough for non-personal stuff.

Just writing a PHP/JS Script to create and send my invoices on the server side with fpdf Almost done..
i'll get my whole company's accounting to my own server methinks, should not be a problem, just a bunch of tables.

Calligra Sheet it terrible when it come to spreadsheets. I use LibreOffice (Alien Bob's package set). It works for me just fine. Have many with multiple sheets and links to other spreadsheets data. I use them to keep track of all financial data for a small NGO I am the Finance Officer for. The largest size wise in 1.1 MiB

If spreadsheets are your main thing, you might want to try out Softmaker's Freeoffice. Better compability (near to 100.00 %) with MS files compared to LibreOffice and other Linux office suites. Drawbacks are that it's proprietary (if that bothers you) plus that the free version is stripped from some functions (e.g. Base).

I use Softmaker Office, the full suite. It's pretty good, although certainly not 100% compatible with MS Office. I received an Excel file not all that long ago with macros which didn't show up at all in Planmaker. They did show up in LibreOffice.

It was a waste of time, of course, trying to tell the government department official that alternatives to MS Office do exist, and that people should be able to open government documents in any office suite.

I use the full (paid) Softmaker Office suite as well. Overall I find its compability track better than LibreOffice but you're right: Softmaker for Linux can't handle MS macro scripting. Don't think WPSOffice for Linux handles macros either (at least not the free version).

My personal opinion is that macros shouldn't be allowed to exist, but that's a different thing - and one sometimes has to yield willy-nilly to the superior powers.

I liked the free version enough to buy the regular version.

Lots of things that have irritated me in LibreOffice are fixed.

Best of all - you can open multiple docs in Tabs!! Can't believe LibreOffice still doesn't support that.

Sing it brother! While you certainly can do some wonderful things with macros/VB, they're really a rod for your own back.

From a business perspective, it's far better to figure out how to do things with standard tools using standard methods wherever possible.
