Oddball Samba Error in Slackware Current

I am encountering an odd error message with samba in current.

When I try to connect from a client box using the new samba 3.2.3, to a server box using samba 3.0.32, I receive the following error message:

Server requested LANMAN password (share-level security) but 'client lanman auth' is disabled
tree connect failed: SUCCESS - 0

I can confirm the problem by running smbclient -L serverbox from the client box.

When I connect from a client box running samba 3.0.32 I experience no problems.

I can work around the 3.2.3 problem when I add the following to the client box smb.conf:

client plaintext auth = yes
client lanman auth = yes

I'm running only a home network, but I'm not in favor of the idea of sending clear passwords.

I would be grateful for confirmation --- or a slap upside my head where I am missing the big picture.

Thanks again.

Today I tested running smbclient -L between two Slackware Current environments. I received the same error there too. At this point I don't know whether the problem is inherent in samba or caused by something else.

The "funny" thing is, that googling this turns up a few hits for a 5 year old Samba bug in a release candidate!

Perhaps this bug has somehow resurfaced in the latest versions?

Have you tried posting this to the Samba mailinglist?

So you are seeing this error with the stock smb.conf files, or your own?

I have not had any problem connecting my Slackware -current machine to my server (which is also running Samba 3.2.3, but not -current), but neither machines are using the stock Slackware configuration files.

My own. I'll test again with the stock config files.
