observation: pecl invalid xml error

I tried pecl in Slackware 14.1 and received the error below. The error only happens when I search for the word "dom". The error is misleading and could result in a wild goose chase.

-Ben

Code:
bash-4.2$ pecl search dom
Retrieving data...0%
.Invalid xml downloaded from "http://pecl.php.net/rest/p/dom_varimport/info.xml": XML Error: 'Invalid character' on line '13'

bash-4.2$ php --version

If you look at the XML file it tries to download, you'll understand why you get an error
