nvidia shellscript slackware 13 xorg.conf

So after I install the new Slackware I suppose I need to get drivers like always so I got NVidia's 64 bit driver for my video card like always but when it was done it asks me if I want it to update xorg.conf to make it use the new nvidia driver next time I start X?

Well I picked yes but the new X doesn't need an xorg.conf. So should I just delete the xorg.conf NVIDIA generated? Will X still find the NVIDIA driver if I do that?

And why would the NVidia xorg.conf generator add settings for my mouse, keyboard, and font paths?

Code:
# nvidia-xconfig: X configuration file generated by nvidia-xconfig
# nvidia-xconfig: version 1.0 (buildmeister@builder58) Fri Aug 14 18:33:37 PDT 2009

You still need an xorg.conf if you want to use binary drivers. You can get by with just having
Code:
 Section "Device"
    Identifier "Device0"
    Driver "nvidia"
    VendorName "NVIDIA Corporation"
EndSection

I assume don't delete that script. if you do, you can't login with Xwindow.

Saying Xorg doesn't need a xorg.conf isn't the right way of looking at it. Better to think of it as xorg trying its best to guess at reasonable settings if one isn't present (And that guess isn't always the most appropriate).

There are many parameters in xorg.conf that you may want to change to fine tune your X server. IMO some of the distros that are trying to run without one at-all are being very short sighted.

Leave the nvidia generated xorg.conf in-place, but feel free to customise it to your own needs.
